As creatures of habit, it’s fairly common that we run into the same situations and roadblocks over and over in our businesses. So if you’re one to start projects and never launch, get hung up and move on to something else, or never even start on your big idea, here are some tips on getting through.
Overcoming Procrastination, Shiny-Object Syndrom, and Perfectionism
If you’re one who starts projects and never launches, gets hung up and moves on to something else, or never even starts on your big idea, here’s something to think about.
As I’ve quoted before, Dan Sullivan says, “The problem is never the problem. The problem is that you don’t know how to think about the problem.”
This is almost certainly the case for you if you’re one who can’t figure out how to get started, gets overwhelmed or distracted and never finishes, or can never get your projects to “good enough”.
Perfectionism, procrastination, distraction, and overwhelm are frequently forms of self-sabotage. Your unconscious mind “helping you out” by keeping you from having to face the real problem.
So what is the problem behind the problem?
As an example, I had a free coaching session with a listener this week and he shared that he gets stalled out trying to fill in the details of what his business should look like. Common enough problem, right? But why?
Well, he also shared that he’d run two previous businesses that failed because of his sales reluctance.
It’s not hard to see (in retrospect anyway) that if the sales bear has mauled you twice already and you know that’s what’s sitting at the end of the path you’re on, you’re not going to rush to get down that path quickly. Easier to let yourself get hung up on a new problem than bear (pun intended) the shame of failing at the same old challenge for a third time.
If you want to solve the problem behind the problem, go kill that bear once and for all. Or, as I suggest in the video, maybe throw a saddle on him and ride him to where you want to be.
And maybe there’s another problem behind the sales problem (or whatever it is in your business).
Maybe it’s a lack of confidence or relationship or problem-solving skills that’s holding you back.
Whatever it is, try not to be distracted by what’s right in front of you and shift your focus to the problem behind the problem.
