Most people would agree that you can’t find true love without risking heartbreak. Yet all the time I talk to business owners who want success without risking failure. Is that even possible? Or could it be what’s holding you back?
Does Avoiding Failure Also Prevent Success?
When I was learning to wakeboard back in the late 90’s I took a bad fall learning a new trick. The fall twisted me up and caused a pulled muscle. I’d had to take a couple months off from boarding, but was able to get back into it the following year, though that pulled muscle bothered me on and off for years following that accident.
But worse than the physical pain, which I could manage with stretching and ibuprofen, was the mental impact. I could do a bunch of little tricks including grabs and spins, but when it came to inverts (flipping upside down) I had a mental block. I was afraid of getting hurt.
I wanted to do a back flip (called a tantrum) badly. You can see one here. I mean I REALLY wanted it, but every time I would make my approach, I’d hold back. I’d tighten up at the last minute and would crash. For years I’d try this trick and crash. It was really frustrating.
Finally, I got to the point that I had developed enough confidence in my riding, had enough time pass since my injury that the memory (and fear) started to fade, and had visualized myself doing it successfully enough times that I was able to fully commit to the trick, make a strong approach, and ride away effortlessly on the other side.
And to be sure, landing the trick was a whole lot easier than falling.
Did you get that? Success was easier than failure!
But I had to let go of the fear of failing first.
It wasn’t that I wanted to fail. I just had to stop being afraid of it.
Now, I talk to business owners all the time who are holding back, making a weak or soft approach, or flinching at the last minute because they are afraid to fail.
