I talk to business owners who have been at it for 5, 10, even 15 years and tell me, “I just hope I can get this figured out.” I understand that frustration.

Focus On The Business Problem You Actually Have

Beyond the emotional health issues I often talk about, which lead some business owners down the frustrating and fruitless path of trying to fulfill emotional needs with business success, there are two main mistakes I see business owners make when defining the problem they’re trying to solve.
The first is thinking of it as a future problem they are trying to solve in advance. The second is not looking at the problem directly, but trying to work around the problem.
Either way, the solutions end up making business feel like a giant Rube Goldberg Machine.
But still, you tell yourself that you just need to make better decisions and eventually you’ll be able to get in front of the problem. I’ve already addressed the flaw with this logic, but the bottom line is you can’t make better decisions without a better decision-making process.
But to find the solution to the problem you’re actually facing in your business I’ll give you a few simple pieces of advice.
1. Focus on Impact and Value – Everything you do feels like the right thing to be doing (or else you wouldn’t be doing it). But not everything you has the same impact nor delivers equal value. Instead of looking for something to add to your business, look for the things that are not having the biggest impact or value and look to subtract them from your business.
2. Don’t over complicate things – Business is not that hard. Deliver value, receive value in exchange, repeat. If it feels significantly harder than that to you, it might be time to simplify.
3. If you can’t get traction with the first two, talk through your problem with a mentor or coach. A little perspective can go a long way towards providing clarity and insight.
