“Just do your best” sounds like great advice, but what happens when we do our best and don’t get the results we want? Business is about delivering results, not effort, so what do you do when you don’t know what else to do?
Is “Do Your Best” Enough In Business?
I’m sure you would say you generally do the best you can and that you make the best decisions your capable of. And that can be why it’s so frustrating to miss your goals and not get the results that you desire. If you’re doing your best, but want more, what’s left?
Here are a couple tips to help you find a solution to this paradox.
Refocus on the Desired Outcomes
What is it you’re trying to accomplish and why? Are they the right goals and objectives? Are they aligned with your core values? If you’re missing the mark, is it possible you’re not aiming for the right target?
Evaluate Your Assumptions
When making decisions and coming up with your best course of action it’s only natural that you make some assumptions – things you know to be true without question. Well, it might be time to question them.
Simplify the Problem
I talk to so many business owners who tell me their number one goal is to simplify their businesses and be easier to work with, yet they spend all their time coming up with new systems, processes, procedures, hiring more people, and doing exactly the opposite of simplifying their business.
Sure, there’s always a good reason, but is it congruent with your goals and objectives?
Change the Premise
Maybe the thing you think you need to do isn’t the thing you actually need to do? Maybe the result you want, isn’t really the result you want? Try asking the question another way and see if you can unravel the dilemma from another perspective. Be your own Devil’s Advocate. Or better yet, talk the problem through with a coach or mentor.
Accept and Move On
Maybe you simply can’t get the result you desire. It happens. So what’s next. Maybe the key is in just finding a way to move forward anyway.
Maybe There’s a Bit of Faith Required
If you believe in the Law of Attraction, God, an organizing universal force, or even just in humanity you probably also recognize that you can’t do it all alone. You are simply not responsible for the outcome. You are responsible for doing your best at something that brings you joy and fulfillment and serves the world with your unique gifts and talents. Do that and let the results be whatever they are. The results you want will show up with you’re ready to receive them.
